The morning was filled with anticipation. The new book bag from Germany (Ranzen) was packed and ready to go. The 1st grade cone (Schultüte), which the kids had crafted while in the SES the previous school year – was filled with little surprises. Once the kids arrived at the school, the excitement really started. Parents were frantically testing their cameras and video devices. Kids were feverishly greeting their school friends whom they had not seen since the prior school year.
The festivities began with a welcome by the new Elementary School Principal, Mrs. Rodrigues, followed by a theatrical performance by the students of both second grades. The finale was the homeroom teachers of the 1A and 1B calling up their new students to gather with their class. The children happily ran up to their new teachers, parents started snapping away multiple photos. Anybody with a keen eye may have seen a few mothers shedding some tears.
The big moment was about to happen – the newly anointed first graders marched very bravely and stoically into their classrooms of their new elementary school. During this time, the families of the were treated to cake and coffee prepared by the parents of the second graders.
An hour later, the excited and proud first graders were released from class. As they gleefully exited the school, the buzzing and humming of cameras picked up again. The children were off to go home and unpack their cones and continue to celebrate their entry to Elementary School. The next day would be their official first day of real classes. Many thought to themselves: “Maybe I’ll get my first homework assignment tomorrow”; meanwhile some parents mused: “In 12 years, they will graduate and have their Abitur”.
