On October 19, just before starting into their well-deserved fall break, the 2nd grade students and their class-room teachers Frau Depoorter and Frau Kessler went on a field trip to the Heidelberg Bakery in Arlington.

The children were cordially greeted by energetic master baker Wolfgang Büchler and his team who had prepared a variety of activities for our 2nd graders: self-made marzipan pumpkins, decorating little cakes, making genuine German Pretzels, even baking – and of course tasting - chocolate cookies. The children were allowed to explore every nook and cranny of the bakery. They not only got a chance to observe every single step of production but also to partake in them. The bakers finally won the children’s hearts when every little helper was allowed to dip a fresh red strawberry into a giant kettle of genuine Swiss chocolate and to let it melt in their mouths afterwards.

A cordial “Thank You” goes out to the bakery’s team, who took so much time out of their day for our students and provided this unique experience!

Miriam Kessler

In the words of our 2nd graders:

I liked most that …

… we got to see how to make marzipan pumpkins with real orange color.

Kaleigh, 2b

… we were given pretzels. I also thought that the big machines were really cool.

Josef, 2b

… we dipped strawberries in chocolate. And then, we ate them!

Nicola, 2a

… we were allowed to try so many goodies.

Sander, 2a

… the dough kept growing and expanding.

Eileen, 2a

… the baker wore a uniform with a German and an American flag.

Lucas, 2b

… they gave us so many goodies. A whole bag full of them!

Lea, 2a
