On Monday, March 28th , 2011, German School Washington hosted the famous female German soccer player, Steffi Jones, President of the Organizational Committee of the Women's FIFA World Cup Germany 2011. Steffi Jones was successful throughout her soccer career - World championships, European championships, national championships, winning over 100 cups for Germany. During an interactive presentation with the upper school students, Steffi Jones promoted the Women's Soccer World Cup 2011 in Germany, and talked about her own life too. Following the presentation, Steffi joined the elementary school students in grades one through sixth (1-6) who surrounded the new Bolzplatz field for the Official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The Principal of the Elementary School, Frau Mielke, served as Master of Ceremonies. The Chair of the Friends of the German School, Christine Weber, gave a short speech explaining all the fundraising efforts made by the students, parents, and friends of the school to assist in paying for the field. Frau Weber presented a gift to Steffi Jones on behalf of the friends, faculty, and the students of the school a hooded sweatshirt signed by students. Afterwards Frau Antje Sina, a member of the School Board's Fundraising Subcommittee, thanked Frau Mielke and Frau Weber for their tremendous work and also the parents, students, faculty and volunteers who had done a wonderful job to assist in raising funds for the sparkling new field. Frau Sina also presented a poster with all the names of all the donors who contributed funds for the Bolzplatz to Herr Gries. The poster was signed by Steffi Jones and will be framed and mounted in the school for all to see.

After the official remarks, Steffi put on her new sweatshirt and started the famous "wave" (Welle) throughout the "Bolzplatz" with all the students from grades 1-6. From each grade, one student was chosen to cut the ribbon and one student was chosen to hold the ribbon. A countdown was started and Steffi cut the ribbon to represent the official opening of the soccer field. After the ribbon cutting, the waiting was over and with a ceremonial kickoff, Steffi Jones officially opened the soccer field's first match . The coed-players (chosen from 3rd and 4th grade) had the honor to play a soccer game in front of a very large crowd and with the participation of our famous guest.

This was truly a great day in our school's life, because everybody, including Steffi Jones celebrated enthusiastically.
