The following class notes have been collected from our alumni. It is the beginning of a long list that we are planning to publish here. . If you are an alumni of the German School Washington, D.C., also affectionately known as the “DSW”, we would love to hear from you and add your story or news to this page. Katrina (Strohecker) Garland
Katrina (Strohecker) Garland was the first American to attend the German School. Her parents enrolled her in the DSW Preschool on MacArthur Blvd in 1961 when she was four years old. She continued until half-way through 3rd grade which was when her family moved to California (Feb 1966).
“The picture below of me on my first day of 1st grade. What is interesting is that I was best friends with the little girl standing next to me, Dr. Beatrice Santorini, and hadn't seen her since 3rd grade - 40 years! We met up at the 50th anniversary! The photo to the right is of me with Beatrice and her two sisters, Eva and Christina - all of us attended the German School. I had always maintained contact with Beatrice and her family but due to scheduling and her living out of the area we had not seen each other. It was a wonderful reunion!
Also, my son Kurt (in the photo with me - to the right) as well as my other two sons, Brent and Troy all attended the DSW.
Thanks for all of your efforts in making the 50th anniversary come to pass!”
Katrina (Strohecker) Garland
Schwimmen der Frauen bei Centennials
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Die Frauen-Schwimmmannschaft des Ursinus College hat die
2010-11 Saison mit dem vierten Platz bei den Centennial Conference
Championships im Gettysburg College beendet. In dieser dreitägigen
Veranstaltung haben sich die Bears 407 Punkte erarbeitet.
Malena Lair Ferrari (Bethesda, MD), Alumni der Deutschen Schule Washington,
gewann hierbei nicht nur die Goldmedaille sondern konnte mit der neuen
Bestzeit von 2:05.13 Minuten auch einen neuen Schulrekord im 200 Meter
Rückenschwimmen aufstellen.
Außerdem hat sie die “NCAA provisional time” im 100 Meter Rückenschwimmen
erreicht, als sie diesen Wettkampf in 57.99 Sekunden schwamm. Marlene
Lair-Ferrari war Dritte im 100 Schmetterlingschwimmen mit 59.37 Sekunden.

Nicole Bastian, geb. Holz
Nicole Bastian, geb. Holz war von Sept. 1991 bis 1994 Schülerin an der DSW, von 1994 bis 1996 arbeitete sie dann als Praktikantin im DSW Kindergarten. Anschliessend ging sie wieder nach Deutschland zurück und absolvierte eine Ausbildung als Erzieherin. Nach meiner Staatsprüfung arbeitete sie einige Jahre als Erzieherin . Am 9.6.2004 heiratete sie und am 20. August 2006 kam das erste Kind Paul Christian (siehe Foto) auf die Welt. Heute lebt Frau Bastian mit ihrer Familie in Laudenbach, einem ländlichen Ort bei Heidelberg.

Adam Chrambach
Adam Chrambach , der seine gesamte Schulzeit (1984-2001) an der DSW verbrachte, ist verheiratet, wohnt in Berlin und arbeitet als Redakteur der europäischen Zeitschrift “indigo”.

Nikolai Cornell
Nikolai Cornell besuchte zehn Jahre (1978 – 1988) den Kindergarten, die Grundschule und das Gymnasium der DSW. Er studierte Architektur an der Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., wo er 1997 seinen Abschluss erhielt. Danach verbrachte er zwei Jahre beim Architektur Büro FACE in San Francisco. Seit dem Sommer 2005 arbeitet er als Auto Show Exhibits Designer bei George P. Johnson in Torrance, California. Die Zeitung “Daily Breeze” veröffentlichte vor kurzem ein Interview mit ihm.

Marcus Fialkowski
Marcus Fialkowski war von 2001 bis 2004 an der DSW und schloss seine Schulzeit hier mit dem Abitur ab. Zwischen Abitur und Studiumsbeginn war er Zeitsoldat bei der Bundeswehr und durchlief die Ausbildung zum Reserveoffizier. Er erhielt im vergangenen Jahr sein Offizierspatent und wechselte in den inaktiven Status. Im Juli 2007 wird er zum Leutnant der Reserve befördert. Er studiert seit 2006 Internationales Management an der International School of Management in Dortmund.

Robert Fürbeck
Robert Fürbeck schloss im April 2007 sein Studium an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München als Diplomkaufmann ab. Er arbeitet als Financial Analyst bei der Allianz in München.

Carla Minami
“When I was in the 6th Grade, my Klassenlehrer, Herr Fabricius, said to me that I could get my Abitur, if I worked hard enough. Prior to that encounter, I had always questioned whether I could survive the German School and feared that my teachers were equally doubtful. Throughout my education at the DSW, those words encouraged and reassured me. Looking back, I value my time at the German School because, though I sometimes found myself annoyed at the small community we lived in, I also learned not to fear trying new things and to have the courage to pursue my interests. Where else could a 5'2" girl be captain of the basketball team for five years? Without the experience of support from friends, teachers and administration at the DSW, I would likely not have had the confidence to apply for the Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to Germany. Thank you!”

Saskia Schlapkohl
Saskia Schlapkohl aus Wilhelmshaven besuchte von 1992 bis 1996 die Grundschule der DSW. Sie ist gelernte Sozialassistentin und vermisst die DSW und die schöne Zeit, die sie hier erleben durfte, sehr.
