Welcome to the Development Web site of the German School Washington, D.C.
What is Development?
The term “development” means advance, expansion or growth, usually in reference to fundraising activities. However, development is more than the acquisition of financial donations, gifts-in-kind and volunteer hours from corporations, foundations, organizations and individual donors. While development does entail the fulfillment of short-term financial needs, the primary focus is long-term relationships to friends, supporters and donors. These relationships require careful planning and must be maintained through regular updates about school activities, invitations to special events, and donor involvement. Therefore, development is a strategic task involving friendraising followed by fundraising.
In the United States, development (usually connected with alumni relations) has been an important, even critical, component of the education landscape. U.S private schools do not receive government support and depend on private donations and volunteers.
Development at the German School
The German School is a private school with German curricula, and cannot be compared with public schools in Germany. Despite the fact that the German government financially supports our school, we have to systematically acquire additional gifts to maintain and expand our scholastic programs and to realize certain projects, such as the renovation and remodeling of the building.
